When I was preparing to start Undergraduate studies, I was at home home, packing and rejoicing.
Finally, I get to be free.
Then my dad told me to speculate how much I will be needing for feeding on a monthly basis supposing I bought 3 meals daily.
I shouted “God forbid”. How can I be buying food? Tufiakwa. I’m not eating outside.
My dad smiled but I still did the calculations.
1 week later…
I realized that cooking for 1 person is different from cooking for a family.
The concept of food variety is well taken care of in a family.
It’s easy to eat jellof rice in the morning, swallow in the afternoon and Ukwa in the night.
The food dey finish sharply. No left overs except for soup and stew.
The pot of soup I will eat for 2weeks is what a family will eat in 2 days.

I didn’t have a fridge, so warming of food was a nightmare.
I couldn’t stand warming soup more than once, there began my journey of eating swallow outside.
Then I stressed over a pot of rice that I would eat 6 times and got fed up with cooking and warming.
Occasionally, I would cook and store in a friend’s fridge but as wahala of people cutting/stealing/taking portions of your food began, I gave up cooking entirely.
Spending nights in studio drawing made it difficult to cook and constantly return to the hostel to warm.
That’s how a freshman that rejected eating outside became a full-time outdoor eater.
I even created menu and budget sef. I will eat okpa and coke/soya milk in the morning (200naira), awgbugbu/achicha in the afternoon (300 naira), garnished indomie with egg at night (300 naira).
Now that school is over and am free, I have a fridge and cooking is now wahala.

Hustling around the kitchen just for 1 stomach is not easy.
Then the problem of finding variety comes. You have to eat rice until it finishes before you cook beans.
The mama put is far from my side, na why I dey complain.
Soshomedia almost made me order this egusi soup online all the way from PH.
If not for fear of manhandling.
